Anechoic structure
Noun and adjective
Body chamber without echoes; fluid-filled structures that appear black on the sonogram.
Example: The first sign of pregnancy on an ultrasound is the appearance of a rounded anechoic structure.
fr: Structure anéchogène
Attenuation
Noun
The tendency for ultrasound waves to decrease as they travel through tissues.
Example: The intensity and amplitude of the sound wave decreases, and this process is known as attenuation.
fr: atténuation
Biopsy
Noun
The removal and examination of tissue, cells, or fluids from the living body.
Example: A biopsy allows scientists to look at a sample of your cells under a microscope and carry out tests on the tissue.
fr: Biopsie
null
Color flow Doppler
Noun and adjective
Doppler scan that measures blood flow by attributing color to different velocities of movement.
Example: During the exam, a color flow Doppler was necessary for the blood circulation.
fr: Doppler couleur.
null
Coronal scanning plane
Noun and adjective
The ultrasound beam enters the body from the lateral (right or left) direction.
Example: The doctor will be doing a coronal scanning plane of her heart.
fr: Une coupe coronale.
null
Couplant gel
noun
Gel used in an ultrasound scan; functions as the medium through which sound energy is transmitted between the transducer and the patient's skin.
Example: The doctor used couplant gel for the ultrasound exam.
Cyst
noun
A membranous sac or cavity of abnormal character in the body, containing fluid.
Example: The doctor found a cyst in my liver.
fr: Un kyste
Distal position
Noun and adjective
Away from the point of origin or trunk
Example: Blood pressure cuffs are placed on the proximal and distal thigh, below the knee and above the ankle.
fr: Position distale.
null
Echocardiogram
noun
Ultrasound of the heart and cardiac blood vessels; used to measure blood flow through the heart and how well it functions.
Example: Yesterday, the doctor told me that I had to pass an echocardiogram.
fr: Échocardiogramme
Gallstones
Noun
They are hard, pebble-like pieces of material, usually made of cholesterol or bilirubin, that form in your gallbladder.
Example: Cholesterol is the primary ingredient in most gallstones.
fr: Un calcul biliaire.
Hyperechoic
Adjective
Structures that return greater echoes of sound waves and appear bright white on a sonogram.
Example: A hyperechoic liver lesion is a region on that liver that shows up on an ultrasound.
fr: Hyperéchogène
null
Hypoechoic
Structures that return weaker echoes of sound waves and appear gray or black on a sonogram.
Example: A hypoechoic mass looks dark gray on an ultrasound.
fr: Hypoéchogène
null
M-mode
Noun and adjective
Early ultrasound modality that shows the time-motion display of the ultrasound wave; displayed as a single scan line, not a visual image.
Example: He had to pass a M-Mode for his heart.
fr: Mode-M
null
Obstetric ultrasound
noun and adjective
Scan of the lower abdomen to detect and monitor a growing fetus during pregnancy; typically occurs during 12-week scans (fetal size and development) and 20-week scans (fetal organs and development).
Example: I had to pass an obstetric ultrasound to see my baby for the first time.
fr: Échographie obstétricale
Sagittal scanning plane
Noun and adjective
the ultrasound beam enters the body from anterior or posterior (front or back) position
Example: They will have to do a sagittal scanning plane to be able to see her liver.
fr: Une coupe sagittale
Speckle noise
Noun
Noise interference that reduces the quality of the image resolution in a sonogram.
Example: Speckle noise is generally serious, causing difficulties for image interpretation.
fr: Du bruit
Time gain compensation
A technique in which signal gain increases as time passes.
Example: A way to overcome ultrasound attenuation is time gain compensation.
fr: Temps de compensation
Transducers
Noun
Devices that produce sound waves in ultrasounds and send return echoes to a computer, which compiles them into a sonogram
Example: Transducers have different types of frequencies depending on what part of the body we want to see.
null
Transverse scanning plane
Noun and adjective
The ultrasound beam enters the body from anterior, posterior or lateral (front, back, right, or left) position; scans in a diagonal or transverse angle.
fr: Une coupe transverse.
null
Ultrasound
Noun
The diagnostic or therapeutic use of ultrasound and especially a noninvasive technique involving the formation of a two-dimensional image used for the examination and measurement of internal body structures and the detection of bodily abnormalities
Example: They used ultrasound to examine his heart.
fr: ultrason
